Help:Editing

From The Public Wongery

For the most part, editing works the same on the Public Wongery as on other MediaWiki wikis; if you've done any editing on Wikipedia or similar wikis, you already know the basics. However, there are a few features and policies unique to the Wongery that even experienced editors of other MediaWiki wikis may not be familiar with. This page covers only those aspects of editing the Public Wongery that do not apply to most MediaWiki wikis; for general help with MediaWiki editing, you can consult the MediaWiki editing help pages.

The Wongery Namespaces

The Wongery has several namespaces not found in most MediaWikis: Game, Build, Asset, etc. Moreover, some of these namespaces encompass multiple "subspaces", and some of those subspaces in turn have multiple subspaces of their own. For instance, within the Game subspace are the subspaces Game:RPG, Game:CCG, Game:Board, etc., and the Game:RPG subspace itself includes Game:RPG:GURPS, Game:RPG:EABA, and so on. Individual articles within those namespaces just append the article title after the full namespace, separated by another colon. For instance, the main page of the Game:RPG subspace is at Game:RPG:Main Page. (For the main pages of all but the top-level subspaces, you can leave out the "Main Page" and just use the subspace name; "Game:RPG" and "Game:RPG:Main Page" both go to the same place.)

Once you've written an article on the Public Wongery, you can create a page for that article in another subspace by using the searchbox to search for the full title of the article (including namespaces), and then clicking the link to create the page. For example, if you have an article called "Wallacio the Bleak", then you can create a Game page for that article by just searching for "Game:Wallacio the Bleak". The same method works to create articles within the subspaces for specific types of game, or specific games; to continue our example, you could create an RPG page for Wallacio the Bleak by searching for "Game:RPG:Wallacio the Bleak", and a page for the character's GURPS statistics by searching for "Game:RPG:GURPS:Wallacio the Bleak". (There's a more user-friendly way of creating these pages in the works, but the search-box method is a workaround for now.)

Note that it's possible to create an article in a subspace even if no corresponding article exists in the "parent space". For example, you could create the article "Game:RPG:GURPS:Wallacio the Bleak" before you created "Game:RPG:Wallacio the Bleak" or "Game:Wallacio the Bleak"—or in fact before you created the "Wallacio the Bleak" article in the mainspace. However, it is recommended that you avoid doing this, mainly because an article in a subspace with no corresponding article in the parent space won't be accessible through the tabs at the top of the page.

Interwiki

As in many MediaWiki wikis, you can create Interwiki links to link to certain wikis and sites outside the Public Wongery. You can do this by putting a prefix for the wiki before the article name, separated by a colon. You can suppress the prefix from showing up by putting a pipe character ("|") after the article name. For example, you can link to Wikipedia and Wiktionary articles by using those names as prefixes: "[[Wikipedia:aardvark|]]" would create the link in this phrase to the Wikipedia article on aardvarks, and "[[Wiktionary:floccinaucinihilipilification|]]" would create the link in this phrase to the Wiktionary article on the word "floccinaucinihilipilification". Notably, you can link to articles in the Central Wongery with the prefix "Central", and to articles in the Metawongery with the prefix "Meta". Thus for instance "[[Central:plane]]" will create a link leading to the article on the Central Wongery about planes, like so: Central:plane. [[Central:plane|]] (note the pipe character at the end) will create the same link, but without showing the prefix: plane.
