September 2, 2025: New Game
So, the Wongery's social media presence has been... lackluster at best. This is partly because I haven't had time to do much with the Wongery's social media accounts, and partially because... well, I'm just bad with social media in general. Heck, my own social media presence, separate from the Wongery, is pretty lackluster too[1]. Still, while the Wongery may not have much of a social media presence, it does have some. I've been meaning to make a Wongery Bluesky account, and finish setting up the Wongery's Discord server, I do have accounts for the Wongery on Tumblr, Mastodon, and Reddit, and if I haven't been terribly active on any of those sites and haven't nearly posted as much there as I probably should if I want to attract any attention to the Wongery, at least I've done the bare minimum to keep them updated, which is to say I've made posts on each of those sites every time I make a new blog post or article[2].
But one additional thing I did do on Reddit, as mentioned in a previous blog post, is create a subreddit there for worldbuilding games, r/WorldbuildingGames[3]. I didn't do that to promote the Wongery—although it did occur to me maybe it can eventually help do that, if I post a worldbuilding game related to a Wongery world—but just because it was something that I wanted to exist. The moderators of the "main" r/worldbuilding subreddit had a habit of deleting any worldbuilding games and activities there that didn't meet certain stringent (and, to me, not particularly clear) criteria, but I'd seen games deleted that I had quite liked and I wanted there to be a place where those games could be posted and persist.
The problem is that, as mentioned previously, I am bad with social media, and I am particularly bad with Reddit, because I am inexperienced with it—I've had a Tumblr account for well over a decade, even if I haven't made particularly good or consistent use of it, but I've had a Reddit account[4] for less than a year. Which means I had—and still have—no idea how to spread the world about the new subreddit and get people to join it and post there. I did post a worldbuilding game there myself back in May, which I then crossposted to a few other subreddits in the hopes of getting some eyes on it, but it ended up not going anywhere, probably partly because it just wasn't a very well thought through or engaging game; partly because despite having spent a significant amount of time making images for the world of the game under the hypothesis that images would help draw attention to it, I for some reason did not post it in such a way that any of those images would show up in the post's preview; and partly for reasons I just do not know or understand because I am, once again, very bad at social media. My posts on the subreddit would get the occasional upvote, but that was about it; overall the subreddit lay fallow and fruitless.
But! Last week someone else posted a worldbuilding game on the subreddit! Unfortunately, I didn't find out about it till days later, because I hadn't been checking the subreddit regularly; not being wise in the ways of Reddit and even less so in the ways of subreddit moderation, I had assumed that as moderator of the subreddit I would get some sort of alert when someone posted there, but that apparently is not the case. I have, however, developed a practice of posting a "Weekly Discussion Thread" in the subreddit every Sunday, not so much with the expectation that there would actually be any discussion there but mostly just to keep the subreddit appearing active and have something posted there... and when I went to the subreddit this last Sunday to post my Weekly Discussion Thread, I saw the new post.
Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, no one had replied to it. I did reply to it myself, of course, once I saw it, but I wish I knew of a way to attract other people to it and drum up participation[5]. I'm grateful that someone else finally posted in the subreddit, but I feel bad that their post isn't getting engagement.
Still... this is the first post in that subreddit by someone other than me, and I hope it won't be the last. Is this the harbinger of an increase in activity in the subreddit? Well, judging by the fact that no one but me has replied to the post, I guess I'd have to say it doesn't look like it... but I can yet hope. I'd really like to see the r/WorldbuildingGame subreddit grow and become active. I mean, it's not my highest priority; it's certainly a lower priority than the Wongery; but it's still something I'd like to see.
If only I weren't so very, very bad at social media.
- ↑ Not as "Clay Salvage"; I don'mt have any social media presence under that name separate from the Wongery. But I do have social media accounts under other names, including, but not limited to, my real name. And I'm not good at keeping up with them either. Actually, the fact that I'm trying to keep up with different pseudonyms for different pursuits may be a contributing factor to my being bad with social media. But probably a less important factor than just my general incompetence.
- ↑ Not that I've posted any new articles lately. I'm sorry. I am working on it; really I am. I've just been working on a lot of other things too.
- ↑ I also created a worldbuilding community on Tumblr, Worldwrights, but I've done absolutely nothing with that since and have not invited anyone to join the community or made any posts there. I... should maybe do that at some point, but until and unless I do I guess there's not much more to say about it.
- ↑ Well, a Reddit account that I actually used; as I mentioned before I did create a Reddit account years ago when I was told I might need it for a freelance job, but I never did need it for that job, and I don't think I ever even logged in with it.
- ↑ I harbor no illusions that this blog post will accomplish any such thing; I think even fewer people read this blog than browse the subreddit. Although on the unlikely off chance that someone did somehow find about the new worldbuilding game through this blog post and might consider participating... please do.
