The Wongery

January 13, 2026: Decuplation

Alas, the last new article in the Central Wongery mainspace was posted more than four months ago, on September 8, 2025[1]. But today... no, I still haven't finished another new article; sorry. But I have finally finished rewriting and expanding an old article. (And the last time I did that was on August 10, 2025[2].

Okay, that may not seem like much, but this is something I've been working on for a while, and it really was a major expansion. The article in question is the Free Republic of Avelax, and prior to the rewrite it was 779 words long (according to LibreOffice's word count[3]. Now, the new version of the article is 7,887 words long. I'd say that's a significant expansion. A tenfold expansion, in fact. A <title drop>decuplation</title drop>.

With this expansion, the article on the Free Republic of Avelax is now the longest article on the wiki, beating out the previous holder of that title, Language, by over a thousand words[4]. So is this setting a new precedent for article length? Will most articles be this long going forward? Now, granted, I think the average article length has overall been increasing over time—a big part of the reason I'm rewriting old articles is because I feel the oldest articles were far too short and didn't give enough detail—but no, I don't think this is the new norm; most articles going forward aren't going to be quite as long as this one. The Free Republic is a very large and powerful nation and there was a lot to say about it, and it's the place I intend to be the focal region for the world of Dadauar so I wanted to be sure to provide plenty of information about it.

Still, while every article about a nation doesn't need quite this much detail, most of not all of the others probably do need more than they currently have. I'm rewriting old articles in the order they were originally posted, and the next one on the schedule is Xolia—which is currently only 1,042 words long. I'm pretty sure I won't have as much to say about Xolia as I did about the Free Republic, and even after the expansion it's not going to be 7,887 words long... but it's going to be a lot longer than it is now. And as I've been working on detailing a city in the Curcalish nation of Djarvin[5], I've realized that there's some pretty important information missing from the article on Djarvin, even though that article was written relatively recently[6]. What currency is used in Djarvin? What languages are spoken there? I don't know, and I'm going to develop things within that country, I really should.

Much of the work I've done as I rewrote and expanded the article on the Free Republic doesn't even currently show up in the article itself—but does lay the groundwork for future articles and further development. I spent quite a bit of time mapping and naming all the provinces and many major terrain features, even if only a few of them are named in this article. But they'll definitely come up in future articles, and in fact I guess eventually they'll come up in this article once I get together a presentable map. Like I said, I have been mapping them, but the map is currently kind of ugly and unpolished and not in a state I really want to show it in the article yet. Although I guess I can show it in this blog post, just for the heck of it. In fact, I'll show two versions, one of the provinces and one of the terrain. (These are both exported from the same Inkscape file, but with different layers visible.)

Anyway, like I said, this rewrite was kind of a major endeavor... but it shouldn't have been a four-month major endeavor. This rewrite shouldn't have taken me that long. As I said before, the last few months of 2025 I was very busy, but still... I could have and probably should have carved out more time for the Wongery. And even in this year so far, what little there's been of it, I don't think I've put in as much time as I should have. I definitely need to put in more time if I hope to keep up with my resolutions and get a hundred new articles done by the end of the year. Of course, though, my other resolutions take up time to fulfill, too, and balancing them all is definitely going to be a challenge...

But this is encroaching on the topic I planned for the next blog post[7], so... see you then.

  1. It was the City Proscribed, in case you're curious, which you probably weren't.
  2. It was Soul War, in case you're curious. Which you probably weren't.
  3. Not that I wrote the article in LibreOffice (and even if I had, I'd have had to remove much of the wiki markup before performing a wordcount), but after posting the article I copied the text of the article body and pasted it into LibreOffice for the word count. You probably weren't curious about that either.
  4. Wait... the article on language was previously the longest article in the wiki? Huh. What was next? Let's see... Plane. Okay. Though that, too, was after a rewrite and expansion.
  5. For reasons that will be explained in the next blog post. Which I hope to have up on Thursday.
  6. Well, in January 2024, which is recent relative to the original articles on the Free Republic and Xolia, anyway. Both those articles were written in January 2009.
  7. Which, as stated in a previous footnote, I hope to have up on Thursday.
