April 4, 2026: Daily NPC—Old Soggy
There are many fish in the lake south of Streamside [which I still really have to name!], but one particular fish is by far the most famous: an enormous catfish the locals call Old Soggy. Or at least, presumably Old Soggy was once a catfish, but it's apparently absorbed a fair amount of ambient elá féerique and it's now something much greater, a ten-meter-long monster with glowing spots and magical powers. Old Soggy can spray jets of water at threats, but that's the least of its abilities; the full extent of its powers isn't known, but among the powers it's been observed to use are translocation, shrinking of other creatures and objects, and turning people into clay. One thing it hasn't been observed to do is talk, or do anything else that shows ellogy; for all its magical powers, it's generally assumed that Old Soggy still has the intelligence of an ordinary catfish—though it's not impossible that it's a lot smarter than that and just hiding it well.
A few fishermen have tried to catch Old Soggy, but of course none have succeeded, and they've been mocked for their folly. More often, people just delight in sightings of the huge creature... and otherwise leave it alone. (It's large enough to swallow a human whole, and indiscriminate enough in its diet to not hesitate to do so.) There is, however, a small cult that's grown around the monstrous catfish, people who worship the thing as a minor god, and carry out ceremonies that are supposed to please or placate it. Some of these cultists have developed magical powers of their own, though whether they're really because of their worship of the catfish is unclear.
Except for its size and coloration, Old Soggy looks much like an ordinary catfish. It has splashes and spots of different colors, and several patches that glow—as do its red-violet eyes. Other than that, its biggest differences from a catfish include the three rows of spines along its back, the ffong tentacles on its belly, and the oversized and razor-sharp fins on its side.
