The Wongery

March 10, 2026: Daily NPC—Scrapple

Scrapple looks like, and at one point was, an ordinary cat. For whatever reason, however, the fey of the forest north of Graypool chose to bestow upon the fortuitious feline a greatly increased intelligence and lengthened lifespan, and now, while unchanged in outward shape and appearance, Scrapple can reason and talk. The cat acts as something of an ambassador of the fey, telling people when the fey have requests... but it's relatively infrequent that the fey do have requests, so the cat spends much of her time just wandering the streets or relaxing in the homes of hospitable Graypool residents. Heightened intelligence notwithstanding, Scrapple largely retains typical feline preferences and tastes, and enjoys lounging in warm places and playing with small objects.

Though many of the neighborhood's residents invite Scrapple into their homes, the cat seems to choose a few favorites, based on criteria known only to her; it is those she visits most often and to whom she most frequently brings gifts—not the dead birds and mice that other cats may give their owners, but small magical trinkets of useful power and unclear origin. Sometimes Scrapple asks her friends to take on particular tasks for the fey, promising them (and giving them) rewards if they complete them. Rarely—perhaps once every few years—Scrapple approaches a resident of Graypool and tells them the fey want them to go into the forest... they will not be harmed, Scrapple promises, but they will not be returning. What actually happens to these people is unknown, and Scrapple isn't saying, but true to the cat's projection, none has returned.

Scrapple is a medium-sized gray tabby cat with dark stripes and a slightly bent tail. Her fur is long and matted in places—many helpful residents have brushed the fur out and cleared the tangles, but it seldom stays that way for long. She speaks in a clear but somewhat breathy voice, sometimes interrupting herself with contented mewling or frustrated growls.
