The Wongery

January 29, 2026: Daily NPC—Pokaa

Pokaa is an elusive graffiti artist who operates primarily in Newbridge, leaving his mark on walls and surfaces throughout the neighborhood. His signature image is a stylized bat, which is also the origin of his pseudonym, which is part of the word for "bat" in his native language. (His birth name was Nemene Huapi, but nowadays he never uses it.) However, he also includes other images in his graffiti, and enjoys including brief bits of original poetry. While the city guard and Customs Office have tried on occasion to stop his activities, he's always eluded them. Some street vendors sell collections of images of Pokaa's work; some of them do so without his authorization, but others give him a cut of the profits in return for his sanction and his signature. This seems to be the main source of Pokaa's income, though he lives frugally and doesn't require much—especially since he knows enough magic to provide for some of his needs that way.

Pokaa's magic, in fact, makes its way into his graffiti work. Many of his artworks are enchanted and can grant beneficial minor magical effects to those who interact with them. The exact nature of that interaction, however, is not obvious; it may involve touching different parts of the art in different locations, or making certain hand motions in front of it, or speaking aloud certain words. Pokaa's magical graffiti always contains hints as to how to activate its powers, and those familiar with his work often find the act of figuring out how to trigger its power an entertaining puzzle. Sometimes, however, the artwork also incorporates traps, minor curses that fall upon those who activate them incorrectly.

Pokaa is a wiry, ruddy-skinned young man who wears his black hair long and decorates it with beads. He has an aquiline nose, a sharply pointed chin, and thin but dark eyebrows. Pokaa does not speak much, but when he does it is generally in a soft, almost whispery near-monotone. He usually dresses in knee-length trousers, a brass necklace, and little else.
