January 7, 2026: Daily NPC—Zarius Indernee
While many of the fishermen of Fishertown are poor, bringing in barely enough to live above subsistence level, some of the most successful fishermen can accumulate considerable wealth, especially if they find a good source of some particularly rare and pricey fish or shellfish. Zarius Indernee was one such fisherman. Many of the fishermen of Fishertown love the sea, but Indernee more than most; even when he wasn't fishing he spent much of his spare time on the water just exploring on his boat. And it paid off; in his exploration Indernee found pearl beds and other sources of valuable resources, and became the richest fisherman in Fishertown—until he disappeared ten years ago. While his house was otherwise untouched, most of his money was missing, and while some people assume he was a victim of robbery he wasn't generally in the habit of carrying all his wealth with him, and no body was ever found. To this day, nobody knows what happened to Zarius Indernee.
Well... that's not entirely true. There are, in fact, two people in Lüm who know exactly what happened to Zarius Indernee. One is Zarius Indernee himself. The other is the wizard he paid a hefty sum to transform him into a creature of the seas, so he could live forever after in the oceans that he loved. But as much affection as he does have for the oceans, lately Indernee has been growing lonely. He's started venturing up on land in disguise, spending time at the local tavern, hoping to find someone who loves the ocean as much as he does, and who'd be willing to join him there—ideally a wife, but failing that at least a friend. So far, despite his subtle questioning, he hasn't found anyone who he thinks seems promising enough to take things further. But he's still hopeful... and he may be growing more desperate.
Zarius Indernee's head still looks much the same as it did when he was human: even-featured with a pointed chin, a triangular nose, and thick blond hair. Below the neck, though, he's anything but, a mélange of scales and fins and tentacles. When he ventures among people on land, he does so wrapped in a thick, dark gray canvas cloak, with which he manages to effectively disguise his unusual anatomy.
