February 5, 2026: Daily NPC—Hwet
Though some adventurers pride themselves on getting by on their wits and innate prowess, many adventurers rely on good weapons, telesmata, and other useful tools. This equipment can be expensive, however, and unless they're from a wealthy background few starting adventurers can afford to outfit themselves as they'd like. Hwet is a moneylender who is happy to circumvent this issue by providing funding for beginning adventurers—or for experienced adventurers who may be in a tight financial spot. He asks for an unusual form of surety, however: the client is their own collateral. ("Hwet" is apparently the entirety of his name; he has no separate given name and surname, or if he does he hasn't revealed them.) Borrowers who don't pay Hwet back become subject to being summoned to other planes to serve customers of Hwet's associates there, until they've provided enough income to said associates to make up for their debts—which, depending on the amount they owe and their own assessed value, may never happen. Successful clients of Hwet who make enough to repay their debts profit by the early boost to their career and capabilities; those who get in too far over their heads may spend much of the rest of their lives serving summoners on distant planes.
Hwet operates out of an unassuming shop on the north edge of Claystone Heights; he doesn't bother with advertising, but gets his business mostly by word of mouth—and is well enough known to get plenty of customers that way. While adventurers make up the majority of his clientèle, he is certainly more than willing to make similar deals with others who travel to Claystone Heights to patronize his establishment. When off work, Hwet enjoys socializing and gambling on games of chance, which he often hosts in his home below his shop—he's not particularly good at these games, and usually ends up losing money, but he enjoys them anyway. He is also a patron of the arts, and seems particularly fascinated by dance, which he seems to appreciate more on an intellectual level than æsthetic.
Hwet is not human, but a salagra, a creature from the plane of Ishil. On Curcalen, however, he generally assumes a form similar to a male human, though with a slight iridescence to his skin and subtly inhuman proportions—shoulders a little too thin, chin a mite too pointed, ears angled a bit too far forward. He has an oval face with a broad mouth and is almost always smiling. Hwet speaks in an even tone with little inflection, but what inflection there is often seems to emphasize the wrong syllable, and he pauses for breath at odd times such as in the middle of a word; when he gets excited he seems to speak with two or three voices at once. Hwet usually wears silvery-gray tunics and slip-on shoes of a similar color.
