April 3, 2026: Daily NPC—Sweseri Hwaw

Among the many policies that the Guild of Joy effected to evade legal action taken against its members and firm up public trust was to promise that all gambling houses in Streamside would be regularly audited by independent examiners to make sure that all their games were aboveboard and that they weren't cheating their customers. (Of course, all the games are rigged in the houses' favor, but that's the nature of gambling houses; at least the audit would ensure there was nothing tipping the odds further.) Accordingly, several inspection companies were formed to perform this task. Today, though, one auditor in particular has taken a strong lead and is the one that almost all gambling houses rely on, a fank named Sweseri Hwaw.

In addition to extensive knowledge of probability and games of chance, Hwaw brings to her job extensive magical skills, which she uses in two ways. First, she can detect the presence of magic in the gambling houses' furniture and equipment, and if she finds it she can analyze the enchantments to check that it's nothing that affects the odds of the game. Furthermore, she can change her appearance—all fanks have some limited ability to alter their shapes, but with her powers she can take it further, appearing as humans or other folks, and taking on a different face each time she appears. That way, she can enter a gambling house without being recognized and perform at least part of her inspection without the owners realizing she's there. Most of the gambling houses in Streamside are honest, at least in the sense that they're not using any magical or mechanical means to tamper with the odds of their games, but sometimes Sweseri does catch one in a con, and when she does the consequences are severe—consequences enforced not by Hwaw, but by the Guild of Joy itself, which polices its own.

In her natural form, Hwaw is a pale blue fank with white striations on her surface. Visible in her interior are a number of spots, mostly red but with a few of different colors, and including two that are oddly almost cubical in shape. She speaks in a high-pitched voice, having a fondness for stringing together long sequences of adjectives and adverbs. Her usual dress, in her natural form, is a collection of blue or purple ouwraps, with a few large spherical brass studs. Of course, when in disguise, she can appear like almost anyone and may have very different costumes.
