Marthera Gwiggin is the proprietor of the Five Caldrons, a popular inn and restaurant in Graypool. The establishment gets its name from the pentad of caldrons that are perpetually cooking stews in the kitchen, to each of which Gwiggin has given a different name; she gradually changes the contents of each cauldron over time, so the stew in a given caldron is almost certain to be very different from that in the same caldron a few months ago, although it is always the case that the five stews are significantly different from each other. Customers can order the stews by the name of the caldron, although they can also order a small sample of all five stews—in a bowl with five compartments specially made for the purpose—to try them all before making a decision. Of course, there are plenty of other, more standardized menu items available for less adventurous customers.

The Five Cauldrons is also known for the homemade gins and perries Gwiggin brews in her extensive cellars, which are made available in various flavored varieties. Recently, Gwiggin had her cellar expanded again, and the diggers broke through into an ancient underground complex of uncertain function; Gwiggin barricaded the area off for now, but is curious about what's down there, and if she's not intrepid enough to venture into the area herself, it wouldn't be hard for someone to convince her to let them explore the complex for her.

Marthera Gwiggin is a compact, rectangular ouphe with long, red-gold hair that tends to float about on its own. She has a large, jutting chin and a wide smile showing three gold teeth, below a nose like a blob of dough. She has a somewhat scratchy voice and a cheerful cackle, and makes liberal use of rhetorical questions. She generally wears practical brown muslin dresses with floral patterns and thick leather boots.
