April 1, 2026: Daily NPC—Enkettel Gadarius

A renowned psychologist associated with the University of Lüm, Enkettel Gadarius formerly lived in Whitegarden but recently moved to Streamside to carry out his work. Though he made his name in studies of people's actions and development under serious stress—in his youth he risked his own life accompanying parties of adventurers to observe them in life-or-death situations—more lately he has become interested in the topic of pleasure—the different types of pleasure different people prefer, and how far people are willing to go in pursuit of it. To study that topic, relocating to Whitegarden seemed a natural move, since nowhere else in Lüm are there more people seeking pleasure in various forms.

Gadarius lives in a neat white house in the west edge of town, purchased from the estate of a wealthy tailor who disappeared after apparently making a bad deal with some fey or demon. He has publicized an open offer to pay people to allow him to observe them in their pursuits of pleasure of any sorts. This may seem creepy, but he honestly has no prurient interest in the topic; indeed, Garadius himself seems to be staunchly asexual. His interest is purely academic, and he will intently watch and take notes as his subjects do whatever it is they are doing. On occasion, in the interests of testing a particular hypothesis or exploring a particular question, he may urge his subjects to go beyond what they would usually do and stretch their comfort zones—offering additional pay, of course, for those who do so. Depending on the exact activity involved, this may occasionally put his subjects in real danger, but it is, after all, in the pursuit of knowledge.

Enkettel Gadarius is a tall, rail-thin man whose joints click slightly when he moves. He has large ears and a huge, beaky nose, and a thatch of dark but graying hair he usually hides under a trapper hat. Garadius speaks unhurriedly, choosing his words carefully, in a lugubrious voice that sometimes has a bit of a nasal whistle. Unless the day is extremely hot, he almost always dresses warmly, in heavy coats and fur-lined trousers, though almost invariably with sleeves and legs that are slightly too short so his bony limbs extend past their ends.
