February 6, 2026: Claystone Heights—Rival Faction
While the Claystone Council has considerable influence in Claystone Heights, its power is unofficial, and not everyone recognizes it, especially those residents of the Heights who aren't adventurers, or interested in the adventurer lifestyle. Even some adventurers, however, prefer a different approach to achieving their goals. One of the most notorious and secretive organizations of Claystone Heights is a group that call themselves the Menagerie—actually active in many parts of Lüm, but centered in Claystone Heights and apparently having started there. The Menagerie is an anarchic organization primarily concerned with throwing light on corruption and bringing down oppressive or compromised elements of the establishment, and working through proclamation and messaging and occasional sabotage. Members of the Menagerie, when doing work for the organization, always appear in animal masks, apparently each member choosing a different animal for their alias. The identities of the Menagerie members are unknown; there are rumors that it includes some members of the Claystone Council, but it's at least as likely that they operate entirely independently of the Council and that there is no overlap in the organizations' membership.
The activities of the Menagerie skirt and sometimes flagrantly cross the boundaries of legality—distributing flyers and posters describing some dishonest government bureaucrat's malfeasance is one thing; vandalizing the bureaucrat's office is quite another. As such, the Menagerie comes into frequent conflict with the city guard, and its members' practice of anonymous disgusise is no doubt at least partly intended to protect its members from prosecution. However, there is a fair amount of public sentiment in favor of the Menagerie, and even some guard members are conflicted in their feelings toward them. In any case, two or three Menagerie members have reportedly been identified and arrested, but the organization as a whole does not seem to have been seriously dissuaded from its activities.
