January 31, 2026: Newbridge—Hooks and Plots

The influx of newcomers in Newbridge often means an influx of adventure. As previously mentioned, PCs who know the city well may hire themselves out as guides, which could easily lead to dangerous situations if their customer blunders into the wrong places... or if the person they're guiding has nefarious intentions themselves. Even if they're not looking for work as guides, they may be asked by an ally or patron to serve as a guide for someone connected to them... with similar potential for adventure.
Example: By one means or another, the PCs end up serving as guides for a visiting woman named Ilvia Sorn, who has a particular fascination with ghosts. She insists the PCs show her the most haunted areas in the city... and promises to pay them a bonus if they can arrange for her to encounter any actual spirits of the dead.
Visitors to Newbridge could bring trouble with them even to those who aren't working as their guides. Again, not all visitors to the city have innocent intentions; someone may come into Lüm with the intent of causing mayhem for some sinister ends. Or someone may enter Lüm with a cursed object in their possession—knowingly or otherwise—that could affect its malediction on those nearby. Or they could be fleeing pursuers who follow them into the city. In any of these cases, since Newbridge is the first part of the city they enter (aside from Mudtown on the other side of the bridge, where they're unlikely to tarry long), that's where the trouble is likely to first manifest...
Example: As the PCs are spending time in the common room of an inn in Northridge, several otherplanar monsters suddenly burst in and start wreaking havoc. It turns out they're after a particular newcomer to the city, Gaben Diridane, who happens to be in the room at the time, and who turns to the PCs for protection, explaining that he uncovered a conspiracy of evil wizards and they've been sending their minions after him to try to kill him before he can reveal what he knows to the authorities. Can the PCs protect him from his enemies—or even if they choose not to, will they become targets since he told them his secret? (Matters can be further complicated, of course, if it turns out this conspiracy is connected to one of the powerful covins that hold so much power on Curcalen...)
Newbridge is not as plagued by crime as some of the central parts of the city, but there is certainly crime here, mostly preying on visitors to the city, that PCs might be asked to help deal with. But the fact that there are three different law enforcement organizations that are as likely to compete as they are to coöperate complicates matters, and may lead to more problems than the crime itself...
Example: Recently the Liedvar Consortium's private security has beat both the city guard and the Customs Office to finding and dealing with the perpetrators of some prominent crimes—and the Consortium has been using these successes as ammunition to try to petition the city council to give their security forces more power and authority. In fact, the Consortium's security forces have been so quick to solve the cases that the leaders of both the other organizations strongly suspect it's a setup and the Consortium has been arranging these crimes themselves... but so far they've been unable to prove anything. Can outsiders maybe find evidence of the Consortium's malfeasance where they couldn't?
Chanter Bridge is the most used entrance and exit to the city of Lüm, and as such it's a vital part of the city's infrastructure. This means it's a tempting target for enemies of the city to strike at, and it's an important site to protect—or to repair if something goes wrong. Should the bridge be blocked by a summoned monster or some impeding enchantment, the city will want it cleared for travel as soon as possible, and anyone available and able may be called upon to help. The fact that so many people pass over the bridge also makes it a tempting target for curses and insidious enchentments...
Example: Lately many new arrivals to Newbridge have been unusually lethargic and distracted, almost zombie-like in their demeanor. Investigation may eventually lead to the discovery that some of the fliers posted on the sides of Chanter Bridge have been cursed, draining élan vital from those who linger near for too long (because, for instance, they take time to read the fliers) and siphoning it to some recipient elsewhere. Who has been posting the fliers, and can they be stopped and the fliers' effects reversed?
