January 4, 2026: University of Lüm—Transportation

Hmm... I don't know that I have too much to say about this one. There are no roads within the university grounds broad enough for carts and similar wheeled vehicles; getting around between university buildings usually involves walking. There are broad subterranean tunnels that connect key locations in the university with the roads outside, which the staff and faculty use to move or bring in equipment and furniture that can't easily be conveyed on these roads, but these tunnels are off-limits to students. (Which, students being what they are, doesn't mean that some students haven't found ways to get into the tunnels anyway.) The tunnels aren't the only option for transportation of large or bulky objects; some staff and faculty members prefer to use translocation or having such objects carried in by summoned flying creatures.

That does not mean that walking is the only form of transportation available to students, however. Many students summon extraplanar mounts to get them across campus more quickly or with less exertion. Favored mounts among students at the University of Lüm include weaselhorses (not actually related to weasels or horses, but bearing some superficial resemblance to both), grasters (a kind of bipedal crocodilian creature), and pompones (creatures resembling giant terrestrial sea cucumbers).

I would maybe say more about how the university relates to the neighboring wards, except I don't know yet what the neighboring wards are. At some point I probably ought to rough out a map of the city, but not today... I'll try to get that done by next week.

In the meantime, though, I guess I probably ought to decide on what ward to focus on next week. Hmm... Well, given its coastal location, I'm going to suppose that fishing is a relatively important industry in Lüm (as it is in much of Djarvin), and I think next week I'll cover the part of the city devoted to that industry, which for now I'll very tentatively call Fishertown. (That name may change by tomorrow.)
