All content in the mainspace of the Central Wongery and the Public Wongery is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. It will also be released under an Akinetic Media License once that license is available. These licensing terms will also apply to Master Wongeries, when and if any exist. Please see the pages for these licenses for more information as to how to use them.
Licensing of Derivative Works
Since the Akinetic Media License does not yet actually exist, currently the only license that the Wongery material is under is the CC-BY-SA license. The intent of the Akinetic Media License, once it does exist, is that it will allow free use of Wongery materials without the ShareAlike provision of the CC-BY-SA license, but only for media that do not involve moving images. (In the meantime, if you do wish to create a derivative work without the ShareAlike provision, you can contact the Grandmaster Wongers to request a custom license.) Derivative works do not have to be licensed under both licenses. (In fact, such a requirement would violate the terms of the CC-BY-SA license.) The dual licensing of the Wongery materials is intended to be an "or", not an "and"; you may choose which license to use for derivative works, depending on your preferences and the nature of your work. We'll have more information here about the options once the AML is completed.
Open Game License
Prior to March 26, 2022, a Licensing page in the Central Wongery stated that the content of all articles in the Central Wongery mainspace was also released under an Open Game License, and was considered Open Game Content. This is no longer the case. The text of certain pages in the Game namespace may be explicitly released under the Open Game License, but this is not true of the mainspace articles.
However, since the Open Game License was intended to be irrevocable (WotC's reprehensible shenanigans in early 2023 notwithstanding), that means that technically the original text of any mainspace articles created before March 26, 2022 is Open Game Content, as are any edits to those articles made before March 26, 2022. But articles posted after this date, and any edits after this date, are not Open Game Content, though they are still released under the CC-BY-SA license.
Other Namespaces
The CC-BY-SA license and (in the future) the AML apply to all material in the mainspace of the Central Wongery and the Public Wongery. They do not apply to the content of the other namespaces, which may be under different licenses. Please check the main pages of the namespaces for their licensing terms, if any. For example, material posted to the Game:RPG:BRP and Game:RPG:Path namespaces is released under an Open RPG Creative License, but not a Creative Commons license.
Custom Licensing
If you want to use Wongery material for a commercial product and don't want to be bound by the "share-alike" terms of the CC-BY-SA license, we can work with you to come up with a license that suits your needs. Please contact us to work something out. We may, of course, ask for some sort of licensing fee, but we'll work to adapt it to the individual licensee and come up with something within their means—we may simply ask for a percent of the profits rather than an up-front fee, for example, if that seems to better fit the licensee's circumstances. (Or, if we really like the project, we may not ask for any licensing fee at all... but we're not making any promises about that.)
We want this material to be used, and if you ask us for a custom license we're much more likely to say yes than no, as long as there's nothing objectionable about your proposed project. However, the following are unacceptable practices that may prevent you from getting a license, and if we do grant a license it may be contingent on the condition that these are not present:
- Offensive content. This by no means signifies that anything created with Wongery assets has to be G-rated, that there's no place for gore or nudity or adult content, but we're not interested in projects that go out of their way to be edgy or offensive. The Wongery forum rules are a good guideline here: we will not approve licenses for products that promote racism, sexism, etc.
- Copyright violations. If you're using other IP from sources besides the Wongery, please make sure you have all necessary permissions for that as well.
- Anything involving NFTs, cryptocurrency, blockchains, or generative "AI". (For these purposes "generative 'AI'" refers to large language models and image generation systems trained on the work of creators who did not give explicit permission; we don't have any problem with, for example, procedural generation of video game maps, even if this may be considered "generative AI" in a very loose sense.)
- Exploitative business practices. If you want permission to make a commercial product based on Wongery intellectual property, you must pay everyone working for you a fair rate, commensurate with the time they put in. This includes (but is not limited to) actors, artists, and programmers. "Exposure" does not count as payment. No exceptions. Nor does a share in hypothetical future revenues.
As long as your project does not violate any of these conditions, contact us and we'll work out a contract.
