February 21, 2026: Daily NPC—Yaerak Bwel

Yaerak Bwel works as a private tutor for the wealthy families of East Island, teaching their children (and in some cases interested adults) the basics of magic and spellcasting. Even if they don't aspire to be full-fledged wizards, many parents think it useful for their children to know a few spells and have a grasp of the carminical fundamentals, and Bwel has made a career out of providing that. She doesn't have her own studio, but comes to her employers' homes for the tutelage, bringing along any supplies she needs for a particular lesson. Bwel's own home is a modest house in the northern part of the neighborhood; she is not among the wealthy herself, but is a descendants of East Island's original settlements. Still, her tutoring work pays well enough, if not to raise her into the ranks of the rich, to at least give her a very comfortable living and put her at the upper socioeconomic end of the holdouts.

While Bwel has an extensive knowledge of magical theory and a broad knowledge of magical history and techniques, she is not a particularly powerful spellcaster herself—nor does she pretend to be. She certainly knows enough to introduce her pupils to the ways of magic and give them enough skills and knowledge to have some basic spellcasting abilities and to know how develop them further on their own. Most of her students have no interest in learning more advanced magic than Bwel can teach, and those that do can seek out other (more expensive) teachers when they have learned all they can from her (and Bwel is closely acquainted with some such advanced teachers that she can recommend). While she may not be a formidable mage, however, Bwel's work does give her an in with many of the richest and most influential families in the East Island, and she has a lot of connections she can put to use if she needs to.

Yaerak Bwel is a petite, slightly chubby woman with a cheery disposition. She has a potato-shaped face and a button nose and wears her black hair down and very long, almost to her waist. Bwel has a high-pitched, almost childlike voice, and when she's not on the job has a tendency to use a lot of big technical words, though she's a good enough teacher to tone that down during her tutoring sessions and use vocabulary that her students can easily understand. Bwel's typical wardrobe is earth-tone ankle-length dresses, usually with a star-shaped brooch over her left breast.
